Homeschool Book Club Plans for 2024-2025! Free templates Included!
Share
I am so excited to start our Book Club again in September. We took a short break for the summer to regroup and get ready for the new school year, but now my kids and I are ready to jump back in—and I think our book club friends are ready, too!
*If you are planning to host your own book club – please enjoy the free templates included in this post – they are Canva templates, so you will need a free Canva account to access them.
Last year, we finished up the Chronicles of Narnia series. (See this post for Narnia-related free templates.) Then, we read some Road Dahl books, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach. I will have to do some blog posts about the movie day parties we threw for those books because they were a LOT of fun. Imagine – candy necklaces, a chocolate fountain, a giant mushroom, and cotton candy tufts – just to give you a peek into what our Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Movie Day was like.
Are you hosting a Charlie and The Chocolate Factory movie day soon? Here is a free template for the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Golden Tickets – they will fit perfectly inside small candy bars for a fun activity/surprise.
Now, the new school year is upon us, and it’s time to look forward to new books, fun get-togethers, and magical movie days.
Here is a peek into what our schedule looks like for our homeschool book club 2024-2025
September
In September 2024, we will be reading The Wild Robot. This book was a bit of a no-brainer because the movie ‘The Wild Robot’ also happens to be coming out at the end of September. So, movie day at the theater will be a first for our group, and we are looking forward to it.
Here are some craft/activity/game/snack and discussion suggestions we will use for this book.
The Wild Robot
- Craft - Build Your Own Robot: Provide materials like cardboard, aluminum foil, pipe cleaners, and markers (this pack of markers lasted a long time) for kids to create their own robot models inspired by Roz.
- Activity - Building Shelter: Use materials like sticks, leaves, and cardboard to build small shelters for toy animals, simulating Roz's efforts to adapt to the wild.
- Snack - Robot Rice Krispie Treats: Use Rice Krispie squares and decorate with candy to look like robots.
- Game - Robot Commands: A Simon Says-style game where one child is the "commander" and gives instructions to the "robots" (other children) to follow.
-
Discussion Questions:
- How do you think Roz feels when she first wakes up on the island? Why?
- What are some things Roz does to survive in the wild?
- Can you think of other ways she could have adapted?
- How do the animals on the island help Roz, and how does Roz help them?
- Why is it important to help others?
- Extra! This is a really cute and fun ‘Make Your Own Sticker Robot’ Activity on Amazon.
October
For October, we will be reading two shorter books – Where The Wild Things Are and Room on The Broom.
Room on The Broom
- Craft - Witch Hats: Create witch hats using black construction paper, glue, and decorations like glitter and stickers.
- Activity - Broom Ride Drawing: Have kids draw themselves riding on the witch’s broom with their favorite animal.
- Snack - Broomstick Pretzels: Use pretzel sticks and cheese or fruit leather to make broomsticks.
- Game – Witch’s Brew Toss: A bean bag toss game where kids try to throw "ingredients" (bean bags) into a cauldron.
-
Discussion Questions –
- Teamwork and Friendship: How do the animals help the witch? Why is it important to help our friends?
- Overcoming Obstacles: What challenges do the witch and her friends face? How do they overcome them?
- Character Traits: What do you like about the witch and the animals? What makes them good friends?
